What Mat says Counts! | Donington Park

#20 | Matew Scholtz

After the Sachsenring Race I was lucky enough to be part of the seven Rookies invited to Peter Clifford’s house for filming for the Red Bull Rookies movie. it was really fun as we did a lot of cool things like archery, bowling and a fire walk. It was great to get to know some of the other Rookies on a social basis where we were not competing on the race track.

scholtzWe arrived at Donington on the Thursday evening for accreditation before the race and I cycled around the track. I had only been there once before in the race last year. On Friday morning I was really excited to get out onto the track, I have fond memories of the track as this is where I got my first podium, I had a third place last year. My intention was to qualify on the front two rows of the grid. In qualifying 1, after 5 laps it started to rain so we basically only got 5 laps to set a fast qualifying time. I was 7th on the grid which I was pleased with.

Qualifying 2 was wet and very slippery. Even though I had a small crash I managed to pick the bike up and get the 2nd quickest lap time in the wet conditions.

For the race my start was pretty good and I was part of the leading pack, I wanted to sit back for a few laps and make my move towards the front of the pack towards the end of the race. Unfortunately everyone was fighting so much which allowed Jakub to make a break. No one wanted to sit in a line and try catch Jakub who pulled a big gap quickly.

When I tried to get to the front of the group I ran off the track in the final corner and lost a lot of time. In some corners I could make up time on the group, but in some corners I lost time. In the end I lost the tow on the group and I could not pull it back. I ended up 7th which was not the result I had in mind.

I’m really looking forward to getting back on the bike and racing again in Brno. I really enjoy the long flowing corners and this suits my style so I am really hoping to get two good results there from the double header.
